Wellington String Players Wanted

25 05 2011

ANNOUNCEMENT: Wellington String Players Wanted

I am setting up The String Orchestra Of Old Saint Paul’s, which will begin formally in July, 2011. Both rehearsals and performances will be in the beautiful and inspiring venue of Old Saint Paul’s.

Number of players wanted: 21 – 25

Ages of players: all ages, and I especially encourage older players to join.

Instrumentalists wanted: violinists, viola players, cellists, double bassists.

Rehearsal time: 4-6pm on Sundays at Old Saint Paul’s, Thorndon.

Yearly subscription cost: $100 per person (to cover expenses)

My vision for the Orchestra: to be a serious organisation with musical integrity and a voice in the community. To focus on musicality, depth and warmth of playing and not to focus on flashy shallow virtuosity. To be a humble organisation which makes decisions purely for the sake of advancing the quality of the music it creates.

You Can’t Beat Wellington (On A Good Day)

5 05 2011

Welcome to a satirical comedy where four socially inept friends attempt to operate a Wellington coffee shop – with spectacularly selfish, chaotic and hilarious results!

You can’t beat Wellington (on a good day) is a sitcom-style show performed in an actual Wellington café (Espressoholic).

Following the lives of The Crew, four unethical, self-centered and devious friends who run a Cuba street coffee shop, this show highlights how people can be motivated by pride, self-interest, and instant gratification while trying to “help” sort out social issues that affect Wellingtonians.

Last year, you fell in love with Owen, Donna, Kenny and Doug, now let them lie, cheat and scheme their way into your heart all over again!

This year, You Can’t Beat Wellington (On a Good Day) runs throughout the Comedy Festival. Each week features a different, brand new episode with special guests.

This show will not play in Auckland, and features only 3 jokes about the wind.

Espressoholic will be open to ticket holders from 7.45pm for meals and drinks

“Funny, intelligent, warm and self-deprecating and comes complete with a flat white.”- Theatreview.org.nz

Remembering Ruby – Friday 18 February

11 02 2011

Friday 18 February - The Ruby Lounge

Remember The Ruby Lounge? Unfortunately it had to close in November. Lots of people really miss it so there’s a “Remembering Ruby” gig to keep the spirit alive.

It’s at Bar Bodega, Friday 18th February, starting at 7:30pm. The music will be a mix of blues, rock, rhythm & blues, and folk; the line-up includes Darren Watson, The Shot Band, Claire Terry Trio, Cindy Muggeridge, Robbie Duncan, Dave Murphy and Dougal Speir; plus a few others including some new artists found at the Tuesday Night Special open mics.Definitely a full night! – and the possibility of a jam session afterwards if anyone’s interested (Bodega’s open till 3am).

Maybe bring a cushion, in case we get a big crowd? They’ve got about 60 chairs there.

$10 on the door; proceeds to the musos.

Please help us spread the word, by email or Facebook or however you share with your friends. We’d love to make this an event to remember. There’s a Facebook event invitation here that you can respond to and pass on to your friends.

FRINGE SHOWS TO SEE 7: This Rugged Beauty

8 02 2011

Wondering what to see for the 2011 Fringe Festival? MASC makes it easy for you.

BINGE CULTURE Collective presents

THIS RUGGED BEAUTY

This Rugged Beauty

The biggest event of 2011. From the makers of “Elimination Rounds” and “Storytime For The Hungry” comes a work of epic scale and dizzying majesty- assuming the whale survives pack-in, the glaciers stay cold, and the keas keep off the lighting grid.

“This Rugged Beauty” is an anarchic, unhinged and hilarious performance taking a hard look at what it means to be branded “kiwi”. We’re exploring the way advertisements and media se…ll us the myths of who we are; from beer billboards, to tourism campaigns, to World Cup slogans. Join as we journey through triumph and despair, victory and disaster, wild storms and golden weather.

This Rugged Beauty

with Rachel Baker, Joel Baxendale, Simon Haren, Claire O’Loughlin and Eli Kent.
Designed by Kattral Lee, Jessica Sweden, Gareth Hobbs and Andrew Simpson.
Dramaturg/publicist: Fiona McNamara. Directed by Ralph Upton. Produced by Rose Guise.
In partnership with the Victoria University Theatre Programme and Fringe 2011.

25 February to 05 March

$13/$18
Bookings: bingeculture@gmail.com
